Citations
A citation is any online mention of your business name, address, and phone number. Citation building means placing those mentions, accurately, on the sites that Google and AI assistants actually read. Google Trends listed "citation building for local seo" as a rising query this fall (+3,300%). The reason is AI. Whitespark's 2026 ranking survey found that three of the top five AI visibility factors are citation factors (Whitespark).
Citation Building for Local SEO
Citation building for local SEO in 2026: the 12 sources worth your time, the order to build them, and why citations now matter for AI search visibility.
If you already have listings everywhere and suspect they're messy, start with our citation audit. This guide covers building new ones.
Before you build
Start from one master record: exact name, address format, local phone number, URL, categories, hours, and description. Our citation audit guide shows how to set it up and clean old listings. Building on top of messy data multiplies the mess. On one photography studio's audit, Yelp still showed the business as closed, contradicting every other listing.
The 12 sources, in build order
Tier 1: Platforms AI and maps pull from directly
- Google Business Profile. This is the anchor. See the GBP optimization checklist.
- Bing Places for Business. It feeds Bing and Microsoft Copilot. See why Bing Places matters for AI search.
- Apple Business. It feeds Apple Maps and Siri. See what changed with Apple Business.
- Yelp. It's heavily cited in AI answers for restaurants and home services.
- Facebook business page. Keep the facts identical to your profile.
Tier 2: Data distribution
- Data aggregators. In the US these include Data Axle and Foursquare. They push your data to many smaller directories.
- Your chamber of commerce. It's local, trusted, and often includes a link.
Tier 3: Industry and trust sources
- Industry directories. Examples: Avvo for lawyers, Healthgrades for doctors, Houzz for contractors, The Knot for wedding vendors.
- BBB. Older audiences still check it.
- Licensing or association listings. State license lookups and trade associations count as high-trust mentions.
Tier 4: Local and earned
- Local news business directories and event listings.
- Partner and supplier "where to buy" or "our partners" pages. These double as links. See local link building.
How many citations do you need?
Fewer than most packages sell. Forty accurate, relevant listings beat 500 directory blasts. Whitespark's survey shows citation signals lost a little weight for Map Pack rankings in 2026 while becoming central for AI visibility. Accuracy and authority matter more than count. I use Whitespark's free citation finder to check what competitors have that a client doesn't. Then we place listings by hand and report every URL.
What AI assistants do with citations
ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode cross-check facts across sources before naming a business. When your hours, services, and location read the same everywhere, you're an easier recommendation to make. Run the five-question check in our AI citation monitoring guide. The sites cited in those answers are your next citation targets.
Mistakes that cost rankings
- Using a call-tracking number in some listings and your main number in others.
- Listing a virtual office as a storefront. Google's guidelines don't allow it.
- Leaving duplicate profiles from old addresses active.
- Buying "citation packs" that submit to spammy, irrelevant sites.
Maintenance rhythm
- Monthly: check Tier 1 platforms for user-suggested edits.
- Quarterly: re-verify Tiers 2–3.
- After any change: if you move, rebrand, or change your phone, update Tier 1 the same day.
