Local SEO

Local SEO for attorneys is the same Maps and website work every local business does, carried out under advertising rules that most marketers ignore. In New Jersey, the Committee on Attorney Advertising's Opinion 49 (issued September 30, 2025) sets out how testimonials can be used. It bars comparative words like "the best" inside endorsements (NJ Courts). Here's how to rank without crossing those lines. For the broader playbook, see local SEO for law firms in New Jersey.

10 tactics

1. Choose a practice-specific primary category

Use "Personal injury attorney," "Family law attorney," or "Criminal justice attorney" rather than "Lawyer." People search by legal problem, not by "lawyer," and the category is how Google matches those problems to you (Whitespark 2026).

2. Keep the firm name exactly as registered

Adding "Best Car Accident Lawyer" to your Business Profile name violates Google's guidelines. It's also an unsubstantiated comparative claim, which New Jersey's advertising rules restrict.

3. Build one deep page per practice area

Each page should cover what the matter involves, the process, typical timelines, and which courts or venues the firm handles. Don't clone "DWI lawyer in [town]" pages. Google treats near-duplicates as doorways (Google spam policies).

4. Audit testimonials and reviews you showcase for comparative language

Opinion 49 bars endorsements that use terms like "the best," "the only," "the top," or "the ultimate." It also bars quoting others' comparative statements that the lawyer couldn't make directly. That matters when you embed or quote Google reviews on your site. Comparisons in your own copy fall under RPC 7.1, which has separate conditions. Our NJ law firm guide covers that rule.

5. Use testimonials the compliant way

Under Opinion 49, testimonials are permitted with identification (full name, initials, or similar). Any testimonial about past results needs the disclaimer "Results may vary depending on your particular facts and legal circumstances," displayed conspicuously. Paid testimonials aren't allowed.

6. Ask for Google reviews, but don't buy or script them

Prospective clients read recent reviews closely before they call (2026 review data). Ask at matter close, when the outcome is fresh. Never offer incentives.

7. Reply to reviews without revealing client matters

Thank reviewers generally. Never confirm representation details or discuss the case. Take disputes offline.

8. Build legal-trust citations

Avvo, Justia, Martindale-Hubbell, county bar association directories, and court-admission listings all carry weight. Firms near county courthouses, such as in Hackensack and Paterson, should list the courts they appear in. AI assistants check these sources before naming a firm. See citation building.

9. Answer the questions clients actually ask

Publish clear answers: "How long does a NJ divorce take?" "What happens at a first DWI appearance?" AI tools quote plain, sourced answers. See AEO for local businesses.

10. Fix intake before buying more visibility

Unanswered calls lose more cases than weak rankings. See 9 leaks between ranking and the phone ringing.

Law firm SEO and paid search

"Law firm seo" draws about 4,400 US searches a month, with CPCs above $80. Legal clicks are some of the most expensive in Google Ads. Organic Maps visibility is often the better long-term value, with paid search used for specific practice areas. Compare channels in local SEO vs. Google Ads.

A quick compliance checklist for your site

  • No "best/top/ultimate" language in any testimonial or quoted review, including image alt text. Own-copy comparisons go through ethics review under RPC 7.1.
  • A results disclaimer next to every outcome testimonial.
  • Attorney bios with admissions and the office address.
  • Separate pages for each office only if each one is genuinely staffed.
