Local SEO
These are 20 local search statistics from primary sources, each with a one-line note on what it means for a local business. I only include numbers I can trace to the original study. If a figure isn't linked to its source, it's not on this list.
Local SEO Statistics 2026
20 sourced local SEO statistics for 2026: reviews, AI recommendations, AI Overviews clicks and ranking factors, with what each means for a local business.
Reviews and trust
Source: BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, 1,002 US adults
- 97% of consumers read online reviews for local businesses. Reviews are the default first step.
- 41% "always" read reviews when choosing a business, up from 29% in 2025.
- 74% only consider reviews from the last three months. Old reviews barely count.
- 32% look at reviews from the last two weeks, up from 20%. Review pace is now a ranking and a sales factor.
- 47% won't use a business with fewer than 20 reviews.
- 31% will only use businesses rated 4.5 stars or higher, up from 17%.
- 89% expect owners to respond to reviews, and 19% expect a reply the same day.
- 80% are likely to use a business that responds to all of its reviews.
- 50% are put off by templated or generic replies. Write each reply by hand.
What it means: a steady monthly review rhythm matters more than a one-time push. Our review velocity guide explains how to set one up.
AI and local discovery
Sources: BrightLocal 2026; Pew Research Center, July 2025
- 45% of consumers use ChatGPT or other AI tools for local recommendations, up from 6% the year before.
- 40% trust AI platforms for business recommendations.
- 82% read AI-generated review summaries, and 23% would rely only on those summaries.
- 71% use Google for reviews, down from 83%. Google still leads, but its share is slipping.
- In Pew's browsing study, an AI summary appeared on 18% of Google searches.
- Users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% without one.
- Users clicked a link inside the AI summary on only about 1% of visits.
What it means: being named inside the answer now matters as much as ranking below it. See how to rank in ChatGPT for local searches and our GEO explainer.
Ranking factors
Sources: Whitespark Local Search Ranking Factors 2026; Google Business Profile Help
- The top Map Pack factor in Whitespark's expert survey is the primary GBP category, followed by proximity to the searcher and keywords in the business title.
- Review and behavioral signals gained weight in the 2026 survey, while link and on-page signals dipped slightly.
- Whitespark's author notes three of the top five AI visibility factors are citation factors. Mentions behave like links in AI search.
- Google names exactly three local ranking factors: relevance, distance, and prominence. It also says you cannot pay for a better local ranking.
What I'd do with these numbers
- Fix your category first. It's free and it's the top factor. Use the GBP optimization checklist.
- Treat reviews as monthly operations, not a campaign.
- Build citations and mentions. They now serve both Maps and AI. See citation building.
- Measure leads, not just rank. See what a local SEO report should show.
